The 63rd annual Indiana University Writers' Conference was held at IU Bloomington June 22-27, 2003. Several writers and poets conducted public readings. The collection of their readings is presented here.
Marlo Thomas Press Conference

On Friday, May 9, 2003 the actress, author and feminist writer, Marlo Thomas was the keynote speaker at "Tapestry: a day for women" which was held on the Indiana-Purdue campus in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Before delivering her keynote address, Ms. Thomas answered questions from the media.
The
Oratorio Chorus and Concert Orchestra perform The High Mass by IU faculty
member Sven-David Sandström

Considered an artistic rebel in his native Sweden, Sandström surprised
his musical contemporaries when he composed The High Mass. Because of
his strict non-conformist Protestant background, it was especially shocking
that he was drawn to the Catholic liturgy in writing such a piece. It
is a mass composition in the grand tradition; a piece of church music
on a level of intention virtually unknown in the history of Swedish
music.
Indiana
University Singers and Chamber Orchestra

The Indiana University Singers, the oldest continuing choral ensemble
in the School of Music, performed J.S. Bach's Mass in B Minor December
2, 2000 in IU's Recital Hall. Conducted by Professor Jan Harrington
for 27 years, the group is composed of 32 of the finest singers carefully
selected from the School of Music student population. The concert of
this glorious masterpiece was the culmination of a semester-long celebration
of Bach's works in honor of his 250th birthday.

Philharmonic Orchestra with guest conductor Joseph Silverstein
- November 14, 1999
Joseph Silverstein, who has appeared as soloist and conductor with more
than 100 orchestras, will conduct the IU Philharmonic Orchestra. He
is the former concertmaster of the Boston Symphony and music director
of the Utah Symphony. The program will include two student violin soloists
in works by Ravel and Saint-Saëns, plus Mussorgsky's popular Pictures
at an Exhibition. The finale will be Ravel's choreographic poem
La Valse. The Philharmonic Orchestra is the premier symphony
of the School of Music's five full-size orchestras and has toured to
Carnegie Hall and to Paris for the opening of the Bastille Opera House.
It has also appeared under Gerard Schwarz, Robert Shaw, Kurt Masur,
Leonard Bernstein and other leading maestros.
Jazz
Ensemble
- November 1, 1999
David Baker, Distinguished Professor of Music and Chair of Indiana's
Jazz Studies Department, dedicated a portion of this program to native
Indiana son Hoagy Carmichael on the 100th anniversary of the popular
composer's birth. Baker, who played with Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson,
Quincy Jones and other music legends, is internationally recognized
as a lecturer, clinician, and author of numerous books on jazz and black
music, and has penned more than 2,000 compositions.
