Tracy M. Sonneborn Lecture
"All Explosions Great and Small"
Victor E. Viola, Distinguished
Professor of Chemistry, Indiana University, Bloomington
Tuesday, December 5, 2000, Whittenberger Auditorium
Victor Viola is the recipient
of the 2000 Tracy M. Sonneborn Award, initiated in 1985 by the Dean
of the Faculties Office to honor an IU professor who has achieved special
distinction as a teacher and as a scholar or artist. Viola has long
been established as one of the world’s leading nuclear chemists. His
studies of nuclear reaction dynamics have continually broken new ground,
and one of his special interests is the connection between nuclear phenomena
and astrophysics. In his lecture he compares the explosion of a supernova
with the explosion of atomic nuclei into fragments in a particle accelerator.
