Sonneborn Lecture: "College Students Today"

Indiana University's
Chancellors' Professor of Higher Education George Kuh delivered the
annual Sonneborn Lecture on Nov. 27, 2001. Kuh, director of the National
Survey of Student Engagement and the College Student Experiences Questionnaire
Research Program, spoke about the factors influencing a college student's
educational success .
The lecture, titled "College Students Today: Why We Can't Leave
Serendipity to Chance," focused on results from the National Survey
of Student Engagement. Kuh concluded what and how much college students
learn depends primarily on where, how, and with whom they spend their
time. In the past, students primarily lived on campus putting them in
close proximity to faculty members, student affairs professionals, and
others. That arrangement is not as prevalent today. Therefore, says
Kuh, it's incumbent on universities to intentionally structure learning
opportunities so students acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies
needed to succeed after college.
