Indiana University can be found in neighborhoods all over the state. IU programs and alumni touch the lives of Hoosiers at every turn in the road. We took a little road trip to find some of them and share them with our viewers.

Our first stop was with a School of Optometry program that serves patients throughout southern Indiana . A plan to build a new Arts and Science Center in Connersville is connected to the IU East campus at Richmond. The South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center has a home on the IU South Bend campus.We continued our road trip with a look at some musical artists recognized by Traditional Arts Indiana, an IU program that supports and nurtures cultural arts and artists throughout the state. In Decatur, we met with old time fiddler Francis Geels . In Schererville, we met the group Mariachi Acero . Finally, Griffith is where we found Milan Opacich playing, making and repairing the time-honored tamburitza .

Indiana University has an impact on water quality throughout the state. One example involves the monitoring of water that Hoosiers are drinking in and around central Indiana . IU's School of Public and Environmental Affairs is working with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to implement the Indiana Clean Lakes Program . IU is helping the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency monitor levels of PCBs in Lake Michigan .

Marshella goes on the road in this show to introduce us to just two IU alumni who have made a difference in their own communities. The first is Marshall County Superior Court Judge Dean Colvin. IU helped develop and celebrate Life Sciences Week throughout Indiana this year. Indiana University has many of the state's resources that will help make the life sciences an integral part of the state's economic future. Just two examples would be the Regenstrief Medical Records System and the Catherine Peachey Breast Cancer Prevention Program.

IU is advancing opportunities, even for the state's younger citizens. In Howard County, the IU Kokomo campus is a parnter is the "Welcome to the Real World" program. IU alumnus James Morris is leading much of the world's efforts to bring relief to the tsunami victims of Indonesia. IU Medical School Dean Craig Brater, M.D. has been appointed to the U.S. Olympic Committee's new Ethics Committee. IU students on the Bloomington campus held their annual "Dance Marathon" this year and raised more than $460,000 to benefit the Riley Hospital for Children.

One of the most significant stories we've ever reported on. IU researcher Linda Malkas has developed a way to detect cancer by using a blood test. Her breakthrough could mean doctors could have the ability to detect cancer in patients years before it can be seen using traditional methods.

Cancer research at IU is helping us understand and even defeat the disease. Here's one man's story.  Smoking is a growin problem among children, especially pre-teen girls. That's why one IU professor is developing a computer game that encourages young girls not to start smoking.  This new Indianapolis company is helping in the fight against cancer and it got its start inside IU.

Indiana University is the state's technology leader and IU technology is touching the lives of Hoosiers. One good example of that is a new telemedicine project involving IU's Riley Children's Hospital at Indianapolis and Evansville's Deaconess Hospital.  Every child born in Indiana is given a blood test and all of those tests are conducted at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis.  All newborns also get a hearing test and the IU Speech and Hearing Clinic in Bloomington has a long history of working with children and adults who suffer from hearing loss.  Doctors from the IU Medical School's Department of Dermatology spent a day at the ballpark this summer, providing free skin cancer screenings to Indianapolis Indians fans.  The IU School of Medicine is the nation's second largest and is supported by seven education centers in different regions of the state.

Indiana University is more than a collection of campuses around the state. IU can be found in your own neighborhood! An archeology project in southwestern Indiana touches fourth grade students.  Elementary students in south central Indiana had a chance to meet a man who has walked on the moon.  IU officials have been logging many miles, traveling around the state and looking for ways to help with the economy of Indiana.  Other "IU Update" shows this year will touch on scientific discoveries and the fight against cancer. They'll also touch on art, theater and music.  We'll take viewers with us out on the road when we visit communities around the state. And don't forget that our alumni are doing wonderful things in other states, too!
