"Celebrate IU Week" Events

Michael A. McRobbie

Michael A. McRobbie will be inaugurated as the 18th president of Indiana University on Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. in the IU Auditorium on the Bloomington campus. The inauguration and a reception immediately following the ceremony are open to the public.

The inauguration is surrounded by a week-long celebration, an opportunity to showcase the width and breadth of Indiana University. Activites will include big-name performers, important lectures, entertaining exhibits, sporting events, the dedications of new buildings and more.

Several of the week's events will be videotaped and those video streams can be accessed from this page. The inauguration itself will be streamed live. Each of the events being videotaped during the week will be available to view from this page shortly after they have ended.

Monday, October 15

Saul Kripke, considered by some to be the world's greatest living philosopher and logician, will deliver the inaugural Presidential Lecture. Kripke, distinguished professor of philosophy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will speak at 3 p.m. on Oct. 15 in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union in Bloomington. This event is free and open to the public.

Tuesday, October 16

Dedication of Simon Hall with President McRobbie presiding. Keynote Remarks: Sidney Taurel, CEO, Eli Lilly and Co. The importance of this new building can not be overstated: It is expected to improve quality of life for thousands through advances in the biomedical and life sciences, bolster the state’s economy through developments in the biotechnology and medical industries, keep IU competitive in attracting the best students, scholars and scientists, and train and prepare the next generation of scholars and scientists.

Wednesday, October 17

Cornerstone unveiling for the Hutton Honors College. President McRobbie will preside. Provost Karen Hanson and Ed Hutton will unveil the cornerstone. The Hutton Honors College recruits diverse, talented and highly-motivated students whose presence on campus serves to enhance the education of all undergraduates. By offering a range of small, challenging courses along with a wide variety of extracurricular and service programs, the Hutton Honors College strives to ensure an enriched academic and social experience for our students and to create an environment that fosters active, innovative learning.

Thursday, October 18

The inauguration ceremony will feature the pageantry of a robed academic procession, a tradition of which dates back to medieval times, and a keynote speech in which the new president will share his vision for the university and its future.

Friday, October 19

Herman B Wells is widely credited for transforming IU into one of the nation's great public universities. His bronze likeness will be unveiled at the Herman B Wells Library (formerly known as the Main Library). This is a free, public event.
