William Ruckelshaus, the first administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, presented a lecture entitled "Environmental Protection in the face of Population and Economic Growth" and participated in a panel discussion April 19, 2006. His lecture dealt with sustaining environmental protection in the face of population and economic growth, particularly in democracies around the world. Burns, president of business group operations and corporate senior vice president at Xerox Corp., was one of four to speak March 9 at the Kelley School of Business' annual business conference. Burns, who was named by Fortune magazine as one the 50 Most Powerful Black Executives in America, told the story of the remarkable recent turnaround at Xerox. Wong, actor and author, presented the lecture "All the World’s a Stage: Supporting the Transformation from Exclusion to Inclusion " on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University fort Wayne. B.D. Wong is perhaps best known from his role as Father Ray Mukada, the compassionate and tireless Catholic priest in the controversial HBO series Oz. Wong can also be seen as a recurring character on NBC’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, where he plays forensic psychiatrist Dr. Huang. In addition, he co-starred with comedian Margaret Cho on her series All-American Girl as a member of television’s first Asian American family when the situation comedy appeared for one season on ABC. Ms. Steinem was the keynote speaker for the Kinsey Institute's series, Women's Sexualities: Portrayals and Perspectives. Along with the Kinsey Institute, Ms. Steinem's talk was sponsored by the IUB Chancellor's office, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Indiana Memorial Union Board and WTIU television.
According to Gloria Steinem, "There's nothing more appropriate than talking about the Kinsey Report (Sexual Behavior in the Human Female) and the feminist revolution together because each owes very much to the other. ... On Oct. 15, 2002, the Indiana University Department of Theatre and Drama presented the second of two public lectures by acclaimed acting teacher and film producer Robert Benedetti. Benedetti, who has won three Emmy Awards in the last five years as producer of the Best Television Movie, discussed Hollywood Ethics: Behind the Oxymoron. Benedetti produced the critically acclaimed 1999 Showtime film, Aldrich Ames: Traitor Within. He won his first Emmy for producing the 1997 HBO film, Miss Evers' Boys, which was nominated for twelve Emmys. In 1999, he produced A Lesson Before Dying (also for HBO), which won the Emmy for Best Picture. Benedetti is the author of The Actor at Work, now in its eighth edition. Several schools, programs and departments at Indiana University Bloomington worked with community organizations to create an interdisciplinary series of events on death penalty issues for the week of Oct. 11-18, 2002. The series, "Two Views: An Engagement of the Community on the Death Penalty," examined opposing views on the controversial issue, including the use of artwork, film, music and forums to explore the feelings and emotions behind it. Sister Helen Prejean, author of the book Dead Man Walking, participated in a forum with Indiana Deputy Attorney General, Tom Perkins, on Oct. 15, 2002. Victor Viola is the recipient of the 2000 Tracy M. Sonneborn Award, initiated in 1985 by the Dean of the Faculties Office to honor an IU professor who has achieved special distinction as a teacher and as a scholar or artist. Viola has long been established as one of the world’s leading nuclear chemists. His studies of nuclear reaction dynamics have continually broken new ground, and one of his special interests is the connection between nuclear phenomena and astrophysics. Christoph Wolff, a preeminent scholar of J.S. Bach, lectured at the IU School of Music in honor of J.S. Bach's 150th birthday. Wolff is the William Powell Mason Professor of Music and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University.
