The Dedication of the Crest Stannous Fluoride National Historic Chemical Landmark celebrates the development, at Indiana University in the 1950s, of the chemical compound stannous fluoride, a groundbreaking advance in the prevention of tooth decay. In partnership with the Procter & Gamble corporation, three IU scientists—Joseph Muhler, Harry Day, William Nebergall—created and refined the formula of what would become the active ingredient in Crest toothpaste. The dedication ceremony features the unveiling of a historic marker that will be permanently installed in the IU Bloomington Chemistry Building. Speakers are President Pamela Whitten, Vice President for Research Russell J. Mumper, Executive Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Rick Van Kooten, Chair of the Department of Chemistry Steven L. Tait, Procter & Gamble Senior Vice President Gerard Baillely, and Mary K. Carroll, president-elect of the American Chemical Society and an IU alumna.
