On February 19, 1942, then–U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the deportation to internment camps of more than 100,000 American citizens of Japanese ancestry. The interning of Japanese Americans led to other unjust and segregationist acts, including the denial of enrollment of Japanese American students in American colleges. Indiana University was one of those colleges, with its Board of Trustees voting on May 9, 1942, to ban Japanese American students from attending. Coinciding with IU’s Bicentennial in 2020, and at the prompting of IU alumnus Eric Langowski, IU’s administration has sought to address this grave violation of those American citizen’s rights, and among its actions was the construction of a commemorative space on the IU Bloomington campus, with a plaque installed on a boulder and accompanied by a bench. On November 12, 2021, this commemorative space was dedicated.
